Community Spotlight: West Seattle

Posted on: September 21, 2020

West Seattle has a vibe of its own. This tight-knit community is full of eclectic shops, restaurants, and businesses, so it comes as no surprise why one-fifth of Seattleites reside there. Just a short water taxi ride from downtown, this unique area provides a suburban feeling while still being close to everything the city has to offer.

West Seattle was an independent town until 1907 when it was associated with Seattle. If you’re west of the Duwamish River, you’re in West Seattle! Known for its gorgeous views of the Olympic Mountains and Cascades, saltwater beach parks like Alki, golf courses, and more. During the warmer months, you can rent kayaks, inline skates, paddleboards, and even tandem bicycles along Alki. If you’re in the mood for fresh and local produce, the farmers market runs year-round every Sunday. Perhaps you find yourself strolling along California Avenue? Explore special shops like Easy Street Recods or Fleurt Collective.

Residents will tell you that this area has much more of a small-town feel, and pride themselves on togetherness. Watch the video below to learn why West Seattleites choose to be a part of this diverse community!
