As the “heart of the Sound,” Vashon Island is a perfect little town for those looking for an escape from the hustle and bustle of city life or even just a quick weekend getaway with a short 20-minute ferry ride from Seattle or Tacoma. As we move through spring and into the summer season, the Island’s recreation opportunities abound. Here are my top five must-visit destinations for your next trip:
It’s no secret that the winery scene in the Pacific Northwest is thriving, and Palouse Winery is hands down a local favorite. George and Linda Kirkish are excellent hosts and are always thrilled to share information about the winery and their award-winning varietals. Their quaint tasting room opens to wonderful backyard views every weekend and even welcomes four-legged family members!
No trip to Vashon would be complete without a visit to the “Old Bicycle in the Tree.” Visitors and residents alike can only imagine what happened to the rusted old children’s bike, which has become entwined with a tree. Those that haven’t visited the landmark before should walk the short trail to view this local legend.
From the first step into Raven’s Nest Art Gallery, one is overwhelmed by the magic of master Tlingit artist and carver Israel Shotridge’s creations. With an extensive portfolio extending across three decades, Shotridge’s works include totem poles, bentwood boxes, carved panels, ceremonial objects, jewelry and more.
An artisanal award-winning Cider and Perry house, Nashi Orchards makes for an amazing weekend stop, with a sip in the tasting room and tour of the vast orchards filled with flavorful fruits. Their libations are also available at a number of local shops and eateries, including Bramble House, May Kitchen, and The Hardware Store, among others.
This organic lavender farm is a peaceful retreat with rows and rows of u-cut lavender available from late-June to July. They also have a lodge for vacation stays and a farm store where you can satisfy your love of the sweet smell of lavender with a variety of products.
Those that have considered embracing the Island lifestyle may do so with a unique opportunity to own The Burton Inn, a top-rated restaurant and four suite inn with unforgettable Puget Sound views. The offering also includes a three bedroom farmhouse style home located next door to the inn, with formal dining, a spacious kitchen, living room with amazing Sound views, a master on the main level and two additional bedrooms upstairs.
