News articles have been shining a spotlight on renewable energy sources, with an emphasis on solar panels. Some companies are finding ways to make the panels blend into your home, making your house appear ordinary. Other companies have chosen to embrace the shiny panels and use them to be eccentric.
One recent exploration into solar panels was led by Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla. Earlier this year he announced that the company would start selling solar tiles that could replace your traditional roof tiles. This week, Musk revealed that the first two installations of the solar roof tiles had been completed.
Releasing two photos of the houses that have been fitted with the tiles, the roofing looks nearly identical to an ordinary roof. From a bird’s eye view, the roofing has a metallic look that is obvious made up of the solar panel material.
One feature that makes the roofing more realistic to buyers is that it is customizable in order to adapt to how much power your house consumes. This coupled with the somewhat expected look of typical shingles makes the solar roofing tiles appealing for buyers who are turned off by the appearance of plain solar panels.
While some are striving to produce renewable energy sources that blend in, others are embracing the concept of the panels. The Copenhagen International School’s Nordhavn campus decided that the panels could be used more eccentrically.
As one of the largest buildings integrating panels in Denmark, the school implemented them as an architectural feature. Wrapped in panels that vary in turquoise hues the school appears to shimmer in the sunlight. The custom-built panels were installed at different angles to capture your full attention. The panels were also built to allow ample sunlight into the building so that the school doesn’t suffer from not having windows.
An increased popularity in renewable energy has led to a spur of creativity amongst designers. It will be interesting to see what kind of products are introduced next to encourage people to buy solar panels.
